A Practical guide for the New Year.
With the arrival of a new year, many of us reflect on what we want to achieve and the changes we desire in our lives. This is the perfect time to set meaningful intentions rather than just vague goals or strict resolutions that difficult to follow after January. One ancient practice that stands out is Sankalpa, which focuses on creating intentions that truly resonate with our authentic selves.
In our goal-driven world, we're often caught in an endless cycle of self-improvement - constantly pushing to be better, do more or achieve greater heights. But what if the path to transformation isn't about changing who we are, but rather uncovering who we've always been? This is where the practice of Sankalpa offers a refreshing perspective.
In this guide, I will walk you through the steps to formulate your Sankalpa for setting powerful intentions this January, helping transform your aspirations into reality.

Understanding Sankalpa
Let’s dive deeper into the meaning of Sankalpa. Originating from Sanskrit, it comes from San = Truth or connection and Kalpa = vow. It translates to ‘resolve’ or ‘determination.’ However, this practice transcends traditional goal-setting. When setting intentions through Sankalpa, you connect with your heart rather than your intellect.
This alignment is crucial. It allows you to form intentions that resonate with who you truly are. By doing this, you bridge the gap between your inner feelings and the external world, making significant changes in your life more achievable.
Preparing Your Heart and Mind
Before you set your intentions, it's vital to create a thoughtful space for reflection. Here’s how you can prepare effectively:
Find Your Quiet Space: Choose a calming environment for your reflection. It might be a cozy nook in your home or a peaceful place outdoors. Make sure it feels inviting and comfortable, perhaps by adding soft lighting or calming music.
Engage in Mindfulness: Spend a few moments in meditation or deep breathing exercises. Research indicates that just 5 to 10 minutes of mindfulness can increase clarity and focus significantly. You might be surprised by the insights that arise in this peaceful state.
Reflect on Your Values: Identify what matters most to you. Think about your passions, joys, and what makes you feel fulfilled. This self-awareness is crucial, helping to craft intentions that genuinely reflect your heart's desires. For instance, if connection with others is a core value, consider how that influences your intentions for the year.
Crafting Your Sankalpa
Now that you’re centered, let’s craft your Sankalpa. Implement these steps for a strong and clear intention:
Use Affirmative Language: Frame your intention positively. Instead of saying “I don’t want to feel anxious,” try “I invite calm and peace into my life.” This shift encourages a more empowering outlook.
Be Specific: Instead of broad intentions like "I want to be healthier," narrow it down. For example, focus on “I will eat five servings of fruits and vegetables daily” or “I will exercise three times a week.” Statistics show that specific goals drastically increase your chance of success.
Keep it Achievable: Ensure your intention feels realistic and manageable. Instead of “I want to travel the world,” consider “I will explore one new city this year.” This brings a sense of accomplishment while motivating further growth.
Make it Personal: Write your intention in the first person. Phrases like “I am” or “I choose” create a deep connection with your intention, integrating it into your daily life.
In my own journey with Sankalpa, I've discovered that the most powerful intentions often aren't about achieving specific outcomes. My first Sankalpa was "I am enough." Simple words, yet they transformed how I approached both my teaching and personal practice. Instead of striving for perfect poses or larger class sizes, I found myself focusing on authentic connection - with myself and my students.
Sometimes your Sankalpa might challenge you. It might feel like a stretch to claim "I am peaceful" when your mind feels anything but calm. Yet this is precisely the power of Sankalpa - it's calling what already exists within you, even if it's currently dormant.
Ritualising Your Intentions

Intentions possess power, but creating rituals can enhance that power. Here’s how to nurture your Sankalpa effectively:
Journaling: Document your intentions in a special journal. This practice not only solidifies your commitment but also provides a space for reflection and tracking your progress throughout the year.
Create a Vision Board: Collect images, quotes, and symbols that visualise your intentions. Display your vision board in a spot where you will see it daily, serving as constant inspiration for your goals.
Regular Affirmation: Repeat your intention aloud daily or multiple times a day. This practice reinforces your commitment and energises your intentions.
Staying Motivated Throughout the Year
January serves as a great launching pad, but staying aligned with your intentions as the year progresses requires dedication. Consider these practices:
Monthly Check-ins: Reserve some time each month to evaluate your progress. Reflect on what strategies are working and what might need adjustment, enhancing your chances of staying on track.
Find an Accountability Partner: Share your intentions with a friend or family member. Their support can help remind you of your goals and motivate you when your resolve weakens.
Stay Open to Change: Life often presents surprises. Allow your intentions to evolve as you grow. For example, if you aspire to improve your well-being but find yourself drawn to a new passion, embrace that shift. Flexibility can lead to unexpected opportunities.
Embracing a Heartfelt Journey
The art of Sankalpa encourages us to set intentions from the heart, paving the way for a meaningful life journey. Sankalpa isn't about adding something new to your life but recognising and nurturing what's already there. It's an invitation to trust in your inherent wholeness while honouring your journey of growth and self-discovery.
This year, commit to this practice for profound personal transformation. By aligning your intentions with your true self, you can create a life filled with purpose and joy. As you explore your own Sankalpa, approach it with gentleness and curiosity. Let it emerge naturally, like a flower blooming in its own time. Your Sankalpa is as unique as you are, and it has the power to guide you toward living your truest, most authentic life.
